My mom has polycystic kidney disease that is a hereditary disease that runs in my family. Just three years ago in spring time my grandma lost her battle to this very disease.  PKD is a disease where cyst start to form in clusters on your kidneys. The cysts primarily stay on the kidneys but can spread throughout the body to other organs causing other health issues. A common complication of polycystic kidney disease is high blood pressure. Kidney failure is another common problem for people with polycystic kidney disease. In 2006 the disease that was "just there" turned into more of a problem than it ever had been in her life. She got a kidney infection during the time we lost my dad that almost took my moms life as well.  She was able to recover but her kidneys suffered permanent damage and had low kidney fuction ever since. My mom is currently at 18% kidney function and in need of a transplant.  Just a year ago in February our greatest fears became a reality. Mom was hospitalized due to her deteriorating health.  It was time to start looking for a kidney donor. My moms best friend since childhood immediately volunteered to be her donor but was unfortunately not a match. I've been told for years by doctors that I would not be able to be her donor until I'm 30 due to how hereditary this disease was but I knew I didn't have the disease and I wouldn't give up without a fight. I found a doctor that felt comfortable reviewing my case and bringing me in for further testing. We found that I do not have the disease but I'm also a perfect match for mom. As of right now our transplant is scheduled for June 24th of 2016 in Rochester MN. The reason why I have created this page is because mom has been off of work for over a year because of her illness and has to pay for most expenses out of pocket.
